I always strive to ensure that my plastic surgery patients in Panama City are well prepared for their chosen procedures. Preparations such as quitting smoking and developing realistic goals are universal, but there are other, smaller things you can do to make your recovery as safe and comfortable as possible. Here are 5 of my favorites:
- Hire a housekeeper. If it isn’t in the budget, enlist a friend or family member to help out with chores for a few days after your surgery. Depending on your procedure, you probably won’t be able to do anything too strenuous. A little extra help washing dishes, taking out the garbage, or cleaning the cat box can go a long way in reducing your discomfort and speeding healing.
- Prep your meals. Make-ahead meals can be a patient’s best friend. By preparing yourself healthy, well-balanced meals that only need to be heated, you can nourish your body with minimal time and effort. Be sure to ask your doctor if you’ll have any food restrictions or dietary considerations after your surgery.
- Stock up. In the same vein, keeping essentials in the house is an often-overlooked step. Be sure you have plenty of toilet paper, toiletries, and other necessities. Ginger ale or ginger candy work great for nausea that may be caused by your medication, and a fiber supplement can help get you regular again.
- Freeze! Ice packs might become your new best friend in the first few days following your surgery, as they can ease soreness and minimize swelling. By keeping a stockpile in your freezer, you can quickly grab one whenever you need relief.
- Rethink your wardrobe. We’re not asking for a complete overhaul, of course. Depending on your procedure, you might have trouble getting clothes on and off while your body heals, and swelling can cause your favorite outfits to become uncomfortable. Invest in a few pairs of inexpensive yoga pants or pajama bottoms for around the house, and look for button- or zip-front shirts that don’t need to be lifted over your head.
