Many patients interested in breast augmentation come to my Boca Raton practice with some knowledge of the procedure already. Most of the information they have gathered comes from friends, family, and even the media. Because of the popularity of the procedure, information is easy to find; unfortunately, so is misinformation.

Those interested in breast augmentation who want to learn as much as possible before consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon should be critical when reading information on breast augmentation, such as this recent article from a Fox News contributor. It’s important to evaluate sources and their credibility.

Here are some good questions for patients to ask when reviewing information:

  • Where is this information published? If the information is online, is it from a reputable media outlet? Is it from a major news source, or a person writing a blog?
  • How does this information compare to what you already know? Are there contradictions?
  • Are quotes and statistics cited? Make sure that any statistics listed are verifiable and come from a trusted source. Quotations should be from unbiased sources, such as physicians.

Less credible sources, such as online forums where plastic surgery patients can post anonymously, can also be very helpful tools when doing research on breast augmentation. Any information found there, though, should be carefully weighed against other sources and confirmed by a physician. Any patient’s best source of information is a board-certified plastic surgeon.
