the dermatology difference The Dermatology DifferenceBy: Alysa Herman, M.D.

At Dr. Brandt Dermatology Associates in Miami each dermatologist is board-certified. There is a difference between having your skin procedure performed by an aesthetician with cosmetic training and a board-certified dermatologist. Some of the most notable differences include:

  • Credentials: Board-certified dermatologists have completed an undergraduate degree and medical degree and have earned the title of “doctor” or “M.D.” Aestheticians, on the other hand, are not considered medical doctors and have not received medical training. Becoming a doctor takes many years (typically between 8 and 12), while becoming a certified aesthetician may take a few as 4 to 6 months.
  • Training: Training is the most significant difference between a board-certified dermatologist and an aesthetician. Board-certified dermatologists are required to complete 4 years of medical school plus years of additional training through accredited residency and internship programs. Additionally, they must pass a series of examinations and must maintain their status with ongoing education and recertification tests. Aestheticians receive certification from a cosmetology or trade school after passing a state board examination.
  • Experience: Board-certified dermatologists are experienced with all issues relating to the skin, hair, and nails. They are qualified to treat both cosmetic and clinical dermatologic concerns, including severe skin conditions such as skin cancer. An aesthetician is not trained in clinical dermatology and cannot diagnose or treat dermatologic skin disorders. This is why, when it comes to your skin’s health and appearance, a board-certified dermatologist is your best option.
